About Our Town

Take a trip through Wardsboro!

Welcome to our Town. All of the web pages in this section were made possible by a school wide field trip in the snow. Our school broke into groups of 5-6 people and gathered information from each location. The 4th Graders then compiled the information into to what you see here.

Auto Service Center

When we went to Danny’s Garage, we saw Dan Hescock who’s the owner and only person that works there. Dan inspects sells and fixes all kinds of cars. If you went there you could get your car fixed although sometimes you need an appointment. The building is 17 years old and has been used for auto repair since then. You need to be experienced in mechanics to be able to work there. Dan likes working on cars and every day he has fun. He built the shop because it’s the only repair shop around.

The shop is open 8:00am till 5:00pm Monday through Saturday

The Post Office

When we visited the post office we talked with Kevin Yurkevicc who is the post master. Kevin sorts the mail so other people can pick it up if they have a mail box. If people don't have a mail box it is given to the delivery trucks like Fedex and UPS. People also come here to buy stamps and send packages. Before it was a post office, the building use to be used for many other things. It was used as a catholic church, general store, Cindy's restaurant, general store (again!), and Cindy's restaurant (again!). In the 1950's, Mr. & Mrs. White used it as a bakery and lived upstairs. If you wanted to become a post master, carrier, or manager you would have to take a exam test. All the mailing supplies, including stamps, has to be picked up in White River Junction. Kevin has been working at the window for about 3-4 months.

The store also has movies to rent and have a banking machine to get money. The building was built in 1887 but wasn't always a general store. It use to be a trading post that sold eggs. Before that it was a post office. Everyday you need how to do math, how to run the cash register, cut meat, blow up balloons, and be nice to people. Most of all, you need to be able to predict the future. Kip likes working the store most of the time. He has worked there for 9 years.

The Fire House

When we went to the Fire House, we talked with Mrs. Smith. Bob Arms is the fire chief but he wasn't there to talk to us. The fire house is used to garage 3-4 trucks as well as a snowmobile and a 4 wheeler for off road emergencies. The heaviest truck in the fire house is the 49m4. The building is also used for training people who volunteer to fight fires. The volunteers sometimes go there for meetings and emergencies. The building is fairly recent, it was built in 1990. You get to be a fire fighter by working hard and attending all the meetings. Currently there are 23 volunteers who keep the fire house running. The fire house gets two to three 911 calls a week.

The Fire house is open from 10:00AM-11:00AM for Non-emergencies. But is always open for 911 emergencies.

The Town Office

When we went to the Town Office we spoke to Jackie Bedard. The Town Office is used for running the town, storing the records, and voting. People might visit if they need to pay taxes, get copies of records, and or get shots for their animals. The building was built around 1980. In the town office, you need to be able to work well with many people. You also need to have math, computer, and spelling skills. The phone rings all day long so you have to have good phone skills. Jackie Bedard has lots of fun and has worked at the town office for 16 years. Each day, 10-20 people come to the town office for help. That doesn't include the 10-20 phone calls.

The Town office is open Monday through Thursday from 9

The Town Hall & Library

When we went to the Town Hall/Library we talked to Darcie Meeks who is the head librarian. Jackie Bedard works in the town office but she is also in charge of the town hall. The town hall is used for lots of different events. Some of the things you can do are check out books, go to parties, havest supper, book club, cub scouts, and go to dances. You might go to the town hall if you needed some books or wanted to party all night. The first town hall burnt down and they put up a new one. If you wanted to work here you would go to college and take special classes like math and working with people.

You can email the library and town hall at: wardsboro@dol.state.vt.us

Arms Sawshop & Power Equipment

When we visited the saw shop, we talked to Bob Arms. Bob uses the building for repairs, storage and sales of tractors, saws and mowers. If you wanted to buy something or get it repaired you'd go to Bob. The building is about 150 years old but he's only been there 25 years. Before Bob was there the building use to be a saw mill where they would build chairs and other things. If you wanted to work for Bob you needed to know how to repair things. You'd also need to know how to fix engines.

The building is open 6 days a week 8:00 am till 5:00pm.
